Earwax Removal in
Barnsley

What is Microsuction?

Microsuction is a gentle and effective method of earwax removal, the clinician will use a suction device to gently remove any earwax whilst viewing the ear using a head loupe to allow full view of the canal the entire time. This is a very safe method of wax removal; it is fast and efficient. The procedure should be painless, but if you do feel any discomfort, please let your clinician know. After your procedure you will be advised on how to care for your ears.

How does microsuction work?

We use a tiny hoover like device to gently suction the wax from the ear canal. Unlike irrigation it is a dry procedure so there is no need for any water meaning we can offer the procedure often without the use of any softening drops prior to your appointment.

We may use drops during the procedure to help the wax glide out of the ear, however the use of the wrong kind of drops prior to your appointment can make the procedure more difficult.

What is ear wax and why do I get a build-up?

Ear wax or cerumen is a natural product that our bodies procedure. It is made daily by our cerumen glands. It is designed to be a natural barrier to help protect and moisturise the ear. It traps dust, dirt, bacteria and also helps to repel insects due to its naturally acidity.

Can I use a cotton bud to remove the wax at home?

No, cotton buds just end up pushing the wax further into the ear making the wax impacted. Also the head can come off the cotton bud and become lodged into the canal causing more issues.

How do I know if I wax build-up?

There are commons signs that may have a build-up of ear wax are they are:

  • Muffled hearing

  • Hearing a buzzing or ringing noise in your ears (tinnitus)

  • A feeling of fullness/mild discomfort

  • Itching of the ears

  • Preventing your hearing aids from working correctly.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you may need to have ear wax removal done. Unsure if you need it, please book an appointment with us. If you have no wax present at your appointment we will complete a thorough ear health check.
